Rewind, Refresh, Recreate - Throwback to the 90s

Image
Rewind/Refresh/Recreate graphic
Continuing our celebration of 60 years of community recreation on the Westshore, this spring and summer we're throwing it back to the 1990s with a new CHEK TV commercial, activity guide theme and seasonal branding for that classic 90s nostalgia.

In the 90s, recreation evolved alongside growing communities. Programs expanded, team sports flourished and family-friendly activities became a cornerstone of everyday life. Street hockey, basketball leagues and after-school programs filled our centres with laughter and movement. The 90s were about participation and play, a decade where recreation became a place for everyone to show up, try something new and stay connected.

Share Your Stories!

Refreshing the Pool: What’s New

Image

During the annual pool closure in April, maintenance crews were busy making upgrades to enhance both the look and performance of our facilities. You've probably already noticed some of the results! Front-line updates include refreshed change rooms, newly retiled floors, a recoated hot tub, and a fully renovated cedar sauna, now complete with the upper bench added back for the full sauna experience. The team also completed pool deck regrouting, door repairs, and surface touch‑ups to keep everything looking its best.

Behind the scenes is where functionality is maintained, like servicing pumps, valves, filters, UV systems, and chemical feed systems, improving energy efficiency, refreshing pool sensors, and recoating high‑use areas of the leisure pool. All this work helps ensure a cleaner, safer, and even more enjoyable experience for everyone.

And here's a big shout out to the whole crew for their hard work during the closure!

Programs That Grow With Your Child

From first steps to after‑school adventures, WSPR’s licensed child care programs offer engaging, active, and supportive experiences for children at every stage.

Our Move.Learn.Play.–based Preschools help young children build confidence, relationships, and physical literacy through play. Led by certified Early Childhood Educators, each day includes arts and crafts, music, storytelling, indoor and outdoor play, and special activities like dance, yoga, sports, and skating—making full use of our 109‑acre site and indoor recreation spaces. Kinderprep, Discovery, and Inside Out programs run from 9:00 am–2:00 pm.

For school‑age children, WSPR’s Afterschool Care delivers a fun, camp‑like experience every afternoon. Children from seven local schools are safely transported by licensed Class 4 drivers to WSPR, where they enjoy sports, free play, creative activities, STEM exploration, and outdoor adventures with consistent, caring leaders.

Together, these programs offer families a trusted, active, and affordable child care pathway—where children feel known, supported, and excited to return.

Fields: Time to Heal

Image

WSPR Fields Closed starting May 1

WSPR fields will be closed starting May 1 to allow for important recovery work, including aeration, sanding, and seeding, which helps rebuild strong, healthy turf. When fields are overused without rest, the soil becomes compacted, drainage is reduced, grass roots weaken, and bare or muddy areas develop—leading to uneven, slippery surfaces and a higher risk of injury.

This recovery period is especially critical to prepare the fields for the heavy rain and high use they endure during the fall and winter seasons. By letting the fields rest and heal now, we’re protecting their long‑term health and ensuring safer, higher‑quality playing conditions for the community when sports return.
