West Shore Parks & Recreation Society Celebrates 60 Years of Community Recreation—and 25 Years of the Centennial Pool

Colwood, B.C. – The West Shore Parks & Recreation Society (WSPR) is proud to celebrate two major milestones in 2026: 60 years of community recreation on the Westshore, and 25 years since the opening of the New Centennial Pool and Weightroom. These anniversaries mark decades of growth, collaboration and dedication to enhancing health, wellness and connection for residents of the Westshore and across Greater Victoria.

WSPR traces its roots back to 1966, when the original Juan de Fuca Parks and Recreation Commission was formed. Shortly after, the Commission secured a lease for Department of National Defence lands, property that would become home to today’s Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre. Since that time, the organization has evolved and expanded to meet the changing needs of a growing community, culminating in 109 acres of pristine parkland and thriving community recreation.

“This is an extraordinary milestone for our community,” said Kimberley Guiry, WSPRS Board Chair “For six decades, our recreation services have helped shape the health and spirit of the Westshore. As we reflect on our history, we’re also looking ahead with excitement to the opportunities and partnerships that will support recreation for the next generation.”

WSPR’s programs and facilities now serve the region, supporting active living, arts and culture, community events, fitness, aquatics, golf, childcare and a vast number of community sport associations and teams. As the region continues to grow, WSPR remains committed to ensuring accessible, inclusive, and high‑quality recreation experiences.

“This anniversary is an opportunity to appreciate how far we’ve come and to celebrate the people and partnerships that make our work possible,” said Grant Brown, Chief Administrative Officer, WSPR. “From the formation of the Commission in 1966 to the Centennial Pool’s opening 25 years ago, each chapter of our history reflects collaboration, innovation, and community pride. We’re excited to share why WSPR really is the ‘Perfect Place to Play’.”

To mark this historic year, WSPR will host a community celebration in Fall 2026. Details will be announced in the coming months, with activities planned for all ages.

As WSPR reflects on its past, it continues to look forward—deepening its commitment to recreation that brings people together, encourages active living and supports a vibrant, connected Westshore.
